Acute care through Telemedicine:  right time, right place

Image of older woman in wheelchair, using hand weights

Providing 24/7 access to consultants in emergency situations makes it possible for health care providers in their communities to deliver care locally.  This reduces the risk, expense and inconvenience of an emergency transfer.  The model for this type of care delivery is the provincial Telestroke program, which is being used to support Telemedicine applications in stroke, burn and trauma.

Telemedicine makes it possible to:
  • expand limited specialist resources across the system.
  • deliver the right care, at the right time, in the right place by the right provider.
  • enable earlier and faster diagnosis for better patient outcomes.
  • avoid unnecessary patient transfers.
  • reduce ER demand and visits.
